TOP NEW YORK STUDIO AVATAR
WINS PRESTIGIOUS TEC AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CREATIVE ACHIEVEMENT

STUDIO HOSTS EXCLUSIVE DTS LISTENING
EVENTS FOR PRODUCERS, ENGINEERS AND RETAILERS
New York, NY - Avatar Studios has
been honored with the prestigious TEC (Technical Excellence & Creativity)
Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement in the Record Production/Album
category at the 18th Annual TEC Awards ceremony held at LA’s Wilshire
Grand Hotel on October 7, 2002. The award is in recognition for
Avatar Studios’ contribution to the recording of Diana Krall’s The
Look of Love album. Kirk Imamura, President of Avatar Studios,
accepted the award, stating: “It is, above all else, the great sound
the artist wishes to achieve that is our goal.”
The Look Of Love album was
produced by Tommy LiPuma for Verve Music Group, and engineered/mixed
by Grammy Award winner Al Schmitt. The recording took place in Avatar’s
legendary Studio A using the vintage Neve 8068 console; the sessions
were assisted by Avatar’s Aya Takemura.
A program of The Mix Foundation for
Excellence inAudio, the TEC Awards were founded in 1985 by the publishers
of Mix Magazineand are held each fall to recognize outstanding achievement
in the field of professional recording and sound production.
As part of their newly expanded industry
involvement, Avatar hosted an exclusive listening party to demonstrate
DVD Audio, the surround sound format for music playable in home
theater and other systems. The event, which took place on October
23 and 24 in Avatar’s famed master recordingStudio A, was hosted
by The DVD Entertainment Group and DTS Digital Theater Systems.
David Del Grosso, VP Marketing for DTS Entertainment, demonstrated
the playback characteristics of DVD Audio and answered questions
from the audience of engineers, producers, retailers and managers.
Avatar is installing DTS recording capabilities, and expects to
have the ability to record into the surround sound format ready
over the next several weeks. Jeff Skillen, VP of Business Development
for DTS Entertainment, and Amy Jo Donner, Executive Director, DVD
Entertainment Group addressed the retailers in attendance and described
the benefits of the system. This is the first of several listening
events leading up to the introduction of surround sound in automotive
applications in the summer of 2003.
Avatar Studios isa 33,000-square-foot
multi-room facility on Manhattan's West Side, dedicated to providing
the highest possible quality audio recording services to the recording
industry. The studio houses four premier recording rooms containing
Neve 8068, two SSL 9000Js and a NeveVRP. The four rooms are equipped
with four ISDN lines per room and a remote recording session can
be set up at a moment’s notice. Avatar also has a ProTools editing
suite available, and recently added the ability to track directly
to the DSD format.
